DECIPHer welcomes a new phase of Health and Care Research Wales funding

  • News

DECIPHer to receive £2.85m funding as part of £49m investment in research infrastructure

The funding, which was announced on 27th January 2025, has been awarded across two categories – sustainability awards, for currently funded groups to maintain effective models of practice and support a trajectory towards self-sustainability, and catalytic awards, to boost capacity and capability in areas of health and care need and emerging Welsh research strength. DECIPHer is one of 12 centres in the sustainability category. DECIPHer was established in 2009 with UKCRC funding, before being funded by Health and Care Research Wales from 2020.

Professor Graham Moore, incoming Director of DECIPHer from April 2025, said:

‘I was a PhD student when DECIPHer first began in 2009, and have spent my career in the Centre from PhD to Professor. I am delighted to be leading this excellent team, as we continue to build on 15 years of impactful research to improve the health of the public, reduce inequalities and drive methodological innovation in intervention research.

Michael Bowdery, Joint Interim Director at Health and Care Research Wales and Head of Programmes, Research and Development Division at Welsh Government, said:

Our approach to providing this funding is based on two criteria – firstly, where there is a clear and compelling research and evidence need in the area for Welsh Government, the NHS and social care system in Wales; and secondly, where there is demonstrably strong or emerging research capacity and capability in the area.

‘These centres embody the principle of research having the power to make a difference to people’s health and wellbeing, and we are pleased to be able to support their activity in this field.’

Professor Simon Murphy, outgoing Director of DECIPHer, said: ‘I am very pleased to note the sustainability funding for the next 5 years of DECIPHer under a renewed leadership team led by Professor Moore. I look forward to continuing my ongoing involvement with DECIPHer, via the strategic partnership with SHRN, knowing that this next phase is in the hands of truly excellent colleagues.’
