Workshop sets the agenda for improving young people’s mental healthwith input from Youth Partner ALPHA

The Transdisciplinary Research for the Improvement of Youth Mental Public Health (TRIUMPH) Network finds new ways to improve young people’s mental health and wellbeing, especially among vulnerable and disadvantaged groups.

It brings together young people, health practitioners, policy-makers and those working with voluntary organisations with academics from across clinical, social sciences, arts and humanities, design, and computer sciences disciplines.

ALPHA is one of four TRIUMPH Youth Partner organisations supporting the network. It helped recruit a diverse group of sixteen young people from across the UK to form the Youth Advisory Group (YAG). This group ensures that young people are meaningfully involved in TRIUMPH events, activities and research.

It was great to see ALPHA’s main objective put into practice: ensuring young people are heard and their opinions taken into account

To define the research priorities for the TRIUMPH network, ALPHA set up an agenda-setting workshop on 12th November 2019 at Portland House, in Cardiff Bay. The workshop, launched by Kirsty Williams, minister for Education, brought together experts in the field of youth mental health across Wales.

ALPHA’s Peter Gee, who organised the workshop, said: ‘The workshop provided a great opportunity for people from diverse fields to share their expertise, plan the direction for future network events and activities and provide scope for funding opportunities and collaborations.

‘A particular highlight was the collaboration between the youth advisory group and researchers. It was great to see ALPHA’s main objective put into practice: ensuring young people are heard and their opinions taken into account. It will be rewarding for them to see how their ideas shape future projects.’
